Microchipping for dogs and cats at home
A quick, simple procedure that gives your pet the best chance of coming home if they’re ever lost, and is a legal requirement for dogs and for cats in England.
Microchipping costs £25 and takes only a few minutes at home. In England, dogs must be microchipped by 8 weeks old and cats by 20 weeks old, and owners must keep their contact details up to date on the microchip database. Owners can be fined up to £500 if a pet isn’t microchipped when required.

Questions
Does microchipping hurt?
The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is placed under the skin between the shoulder blades with a needle, much like a vaccination. Most pets barely react.
Can you check my pet’s existing microchip?
Yes. Mara can scan the microchip during any visit, for example before a travel certificate, and tell you if it can’t be read.
Who updates the database when I move house?
You do. Contact the database company your pet is registered with to update your details; some charge a small fee.
